Ida Kellerman is the founder and trainer of each team working under the Domestic Dream Team name. Ida is a qualified dental assistant that saw the gap in the market. Ida saw that many teams were not trained and does not give the same service as the other team working at the same company. So Ida decided to start training teams in her spare time.
First project was with a group of homeless and destitute people that had no "want" left to better themselves. Ida trained this group for Avril at Livinghope Christian centre in Muizenberg. The result was amazing and the team made the headlines in the community paper in 1996. A second team was trained in 1996 and it was again a great success. In 1997 Ida disbanded Domestic Dream Team and went to study at CPUT where she obtained a National Certificate in Dental Assisting. Working only as a locum dental assistant, Ida has time inbetween to dedicate to training her teams.
Each team is taken to clean a clean a building of their church in their community for their practical training. The aim of the excersise is to teach the team to use 3 sessions of 3 hours each to clean the house inside and outside. After 6 sessions the house should be clean. The team focusses only on furniture, walls, floors, windows, doors,etc.
What to expect on a 3 hour contract
A team consist of 4 workers. Three workers inside the house and one worker outside the house. Each worker inside the house is given 2 rooms to clean for one hour per room. Each home owner chooses what they want the team to do for the 3 hours they pay for from the list of duties that will become the "worksite procedure manual".
How much do we pay?
The team gets R300 per 3 hour session. This works out to R60 per worker for the 3 hours and R60 for cleaning chemicals, uniforms, etc. that they supply to clean your house. Chars for the day costs R180 as well and the full amount goes to the char. So whether the ladies work in the team for the day or goes to work as a char for the day they take home R180 for the days work. Each worker is proud of earning a good income and really strives to maintain their own clients. There is no driver or manager eating out of your fridge while the workers slaves away. The ladies brings their own lunch and understands that theft will result in loss of clients and then they are back in the unemployment line.
How does the team concept work?
Ida trains the teamleaders and helps them to set up their own little business. For the first 3 weeks they get supervised and trained by volenteers that were trained by Domestic Dream Team course. Thereafter we help them to obtain work by advertising Domestic Dream Team in that area. After 3 months the team is organised and able to assess their own work, write "worksite procedure mauals" for their new customers and keep their own customers happy.
What is the motive?
We believe in empowering the workers to:
1. Take responsibility for their own work.
2. Take responsibility for their team mates.
3. Run their own franchise of Domestic Dream Team without paying for start-up or advice.
4. Working hard and giving your best will be a sure way of paying your bills.
5. No work will result in no pay. Each worker is allowed to take off one day per week and the rest of the team has to work an extra hard per client to make up for the missing team member. The workers that are working gets compensated for the work done.
6. Save money while you work in order to have money when you want to go to your family for holiday.
7. Workers can take tea breaks, lunch breaks and any breaks when they are not on the clients property. Considering that working time gets paid for they are encouraged to eat and rest between customers.
8. No work results in no pay. The team members on duty divide the pay amongst themselves as they had to work extra hard and fast to make up for the missing team member.
What makes Domestic Dream Team different from other teams?
Our teams are well paid by the team supervisor. Each team works for themselves and not for a boss that sits in the office. Each team member wants to earn the maximum income for the day and want to keep their customers happy. Each team was built up from scratch. Therefore they remember what they could afford before they had 3 houses to clean per day. They are thereby encouraged to keep their 3 houses happy per day. Each worker is allowed to work for themselves on weekends (at R250 per day) to improve their earning potential for the week. Each team member understands that the team belongs to themselves and whether they make it or break it is their doing.
